Sons of faith
Text: Gen. 15:1-6
Abram believed God’s Word & God accounted (credited) it to him as righteousness.
(v.1) Abram has just left his own country in obedience to God’s instruction. God offered Himself to Abram as his shield (protection) & exceeding great reward (basically all that He God is).
However Abram mentioned the fact that he doesn’t have a son to be his heir yet. Abram must have been preoccupied with the thought of this particular lack in his life and had blocked out all that God wanted to give him.
As Christians we need to learn not to be so preoccupied with our needs that we displace God & His Word/promises to us from our minds/hearts. Our insistence and preoccupation with one thing in our lives can block God out of our lives, that thing you’re holding onto can become a god in our lives.
We need to realise that the LORD is bigger than that need that we have.
Notice that after v.6, this issue of his heir was not mentioned again. It was accounted to him as righteousness.
Romans 4:16-22
From Paul’s rendition of this story takes Abraham’s state of mind into account. Abraham was considering the state of things in his life physically, he looked at the fact that he & Sara were aging and were more or less past the age of childbirth.
What lessons can we learn from this and apply to our lives?
- You have to learn to believe God. (Heb. 11:6)
- You need to realise that there was nothing that Abraham could use as a yardstick as regards faith.
- God is able to perform whatever He says He will do. (Eph. 3:20)
- However you need to realise that because He is able to do something doesn’t mean He will be willing to do it.
- Do not focus on the negative (Rom. 4:19)
- Bible faith doesn’t deny reality, but you need to look away from the current negative circumstances that you can see and look and focus on what is possible.
- God’s prophecies always talk about the future, keep His prophecies as your primary focus.
- Be fully convinced
- Be unshakable in your confidence that what you desire is done/accomplished.
- Keep looking at what you desire through the eyes of faith: it will come to pass. (Num. 21:9 AMP)
- Faith expects you to engage the
- Give glory to God
- You’re a child of the living God who has got your back; you have a reason to rejoice.
